TRANSCRIPT: SEASON 1: EPISODE 37 EPISODE HOW DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY IMPACTS DAILY HYGIENE HABITS

1:23

[Music]

1:27

hey everybody welcome back back

1:30

to the around and around the OCD Circle

1:32

podcast I'm glad you're here good

1:33

morning I hope you're having a beautiful

1:35

day so far I wanted to remind you guys

1:39

that this is not really my podcast it's

1:41

your podcast so if there's something you

1:43

would like for me to discuss please let

1:45

me know also if you or anyone you know

1:49

would like to come on and tell your

1:50

story you're always welcome to do that

1:52

just message me at any of my social

1:54

media links in the show notes today I'm

1:58

going to be talking about a pretty

2:00

uncomfortable Topic at least for me I

2:04

imagine it's uncomfortable for other

2:06

people as well we're going to be talking

2:08

about uh depression and anxiety how it

2:12

can significantly impact daily hygiene

2:15

habits I'm going to be doing this raw I

2:18

don't have anything written down I do

2:21

have a bullet point list

2:24

of of ways that this happens so as I

2:27

list each bullet point I'm going to talk

2:29

about my person experience and then if

2:31

any of you would like to let me know

2:34

some of your experiences with these I

2:36

would love to hear

2:38

them so the first one is decreased

2:42

motivation both depression and anxiety

2:45

can sap motivation and energy making it

2:49

difficult for individuals to muster the

2:52

drive to engage in self-care activities

2:55

like showering brushing teeth or

2:58

grooming

3:01

so before I go down this list I wanted

3:05

to talk about one of the times in my

3:07

life where I was probably the most

3:10

depressed I've ever

3:13

been that was the year 206 I believe

3:18

and during that time for several weeks I

3:22

would not

3:23

shower I was so depressed I would just

3:26

to get in and out of the shower would

3:28

have been a struggle for for me and I

3:32

had a business and I would go into work

3:35

every day and be around people not

3:38

having showered and I don't know I think

3:42

I was just so out of it mental

3:45

healthwise that I didn't realize how it

3:47

was affecting others around

3:49

me and I remember going to therapy one

3:53

day and telling her you know I haven't

3:57

showered in probably two I mean I can't

3:59

remember remember the last time I

4:00

showered and she said oh I know she says

4:03

I can smell you and I remember looking

4:06

at her and going you can smell me and

4:09

she's like yeah and like she was on the

4:11

other side of the room and I was so

4:14

embarrassed and it took

4:17

that

4:19

conversation for me to realize how

4:23

really really depressed I

4:25

was and that I was not even noticing

4:30

how this was affecting other people I

4:32

can't imagine my family my family didn't

4:34

say anything about it my friends didn't

4:36

say anything about it but luckily my

4:39

therapist came out and told me the

4:43

truth I still to this day when I get

4:45

depressed or anxious um probably don't

4:49

shower as often as I

4:51

should it's just not something that I

4:55

have the energy to do I'm not motivated

4:58

to do it especially when I'm going to

5:00

stay home and not go anywhere I figure

5:04

nobody's going to notice

5:06

so why should I take the time to shower

5:09

you know what I

5:11

mean the only reason truly that I forced

5:14

myself into taking a shower is because

5:16

of my hair because I don't like my hair

5:19

to look oily

5:21

greasy I don't like my hair to feel

5:23

greasy

5:25

so I can even remember back in 2006

5:28

where I would just dunk my head and to

5:29

the sink and wash my hair but I wouldn't

5:32

take a shower I don't know if any of you

5:35

have ever felt this

5:37

way and we'll talk about over showering

5:40

later because some people shower an

5:43

excessive amount of time

5:45

right brushing my teeth is a real

5:48

challenge for me I don't like things in

5:50

my

5:51

mouth um so therefore I don't like

5:54

toothbrushes I don't like toothpaste in

5:56

my mouth and my least favorite thing is

6:00

to do dental

6:02

floss so I will go a long long time

6:06

without brushing my teeth or using

6:08

dental

6:09

floss surprisingly my teeth are in

6:13

pretty decent Health but there was a

6:15

time in my life where I did not go to

6:17

the dentist for 25 years and I think

6:19

I've talked about this already and I was

6:22

really really lucky that my teeth were

6:25

not harmed I didn't have Cav you know

6:28

excessive cavities

6:30

I did have some gum issues but it wasn't

6:33

bad enough to where they had to do any

6:34

kind of surgery or really bad treatment

6:37

on my

6:38

gums but brushing my teeth right now is

6:41

a real struggle

6:44

and um especially the dental floss and I

6:48

will probably be doing dental floss

6:50

right now maybe once a week if I'm

6:53

lucky and I just have to literally force

6:56

myself to do it and then the other

6:58

self-care activity is

7:00

[Music]

7:02

grooming and by grooming I guess they

7:04

mean you know brushing your hair things

7:08

like that shaving your legs or shaving

7:11

your face if you're if you're

7:14

male um I think back then y grooming was

7:18

a problem but I pretty good about

7:20

brushing my hair and and things like

7:23

that so let's go to bullet point number

7:25

two and that is

7:27

fatigue mental health conditions can can

7:29

often lead to feelings of exhaustion or

7:32

constant fatigue which may result in

7:35

individuals neglecting their hygiene

7:37

routine because they simply lack the

7:39

energy to perform these tasks so fatigue

7:44

is different than decreased motivation

7:47

decreased motivation which we were just

7:49

talking about is like you just don't

7:51

want to do it you don't care to do it

7:54

and fatigue is that you're just too

7:57

exhausted to even do it

8:00

and I think people who don't have good

8:05

daily hygiene habits a lot of times

8:07

they're presented as being

8:10

lazy and or that they just don't care

8:14

but when you have like a chronic fatigue

8:16

issue especially um you know a physical

8:21

or mental health chronic fatigue

8:24

issue just the mere amount of time and

8:27

energy it takes to get undressed get in

8:31

the shower get dressed it it it can

8:35

really zap it out of you I mean I know I

8:37

take a lot of naps I am extremely tired

8:41

when I am depressed

8:43

and fatigue is a very big contribution

8:46

to

8:47

that number three is negative thought

8:51

patterns depression and anxiety can lead

8:53

to negative thoughts and feelings about

8:56

oneself including low self-esteem or

8:59

feeling feelings of

9:01

worthlessness this can manifest in

9:03

neglecting personal hygiene as

9:05

individuals may feel they are not

9:08

deserving of

9:11

self-care I'm having to think about that

9:13

for a minute I guess you

9:16

know when I get down on myself sometimes

9:20

I feel like you know why am I bothering

9:23

to do this why am I bothering to shower

9:26

why am I bothering to put makeup on wash

9:29

my face you know smell good nobody's

9:32

going to notice those are the kind of

9:35

negative thoughts that I get

9:37

into

9:39

and I guess that means I feel kind of

9:43

worthless you know why why should I cut

9:46

my hair why should I um take a shower

9:52

why should I brush my teeth you know

9:54

nobody's going to Care nobody's going to

9:55

notice I'm not that important so yeah I

9:58

think number three definitely I can

10:01

relate to that how about

10:03

you number four is avoidance

10:07

behaviors anxiety can cause individuals

10:10

to avoid situations or tasks that

10:13

trigger their anxiety this avoidance May

10:16

extend to hygiene related activities

10:19

particularly if they involve leaving the

10:21

house or interacting with others so my

10:25

avoidance behavior is towards flossing I

10:29

I get very anxious when I floss I get

10:33

very anxious when I brush my teeth

10:35

because I don't like things on my mouth

10:36

I have to actually force myself to put

10:41

that toothbrush in my mouth and move it

10:44

back and forth for a certain amount of

10:48

time and so I believe my avoidance

10:51

behavior is in the teeth brushing

10:55

routine I'm not really sure what they

10:57

mean by hygiene Rel ated

11:00

activities um that involve leaving the

11:02

house or interacting with others

11:05

but I'm not really sure about that what

11:08

that

11:10

means number five is disruptive sleep

11:13

patterns depression and anxiety often

11:16

disrupt disrupt sleep patterns leading

11:19

to insomnia or oversleeping poor sleep

11:22

can exasperate feelings of fatigue and

11:25

further reduce motivation to engage in

11:28

hygiene

11:30

practices I definitely have poor sleep

11:33

habits I stay up till 1 or 2:00 every

11:37

morning usually listening to podcasts

11:40

and playing games on my phone or my

11:44

iPad and I play the same games over and

11:47

over again until they feel right I could

11:51

play for an hour and it feels right but

11:53

usually I have to play 2 to 3 hours

11:56

before it feels right then I I will say

12:00

well if I win one more

12:04

game um it's now midnight I'm going to

12:07

play again until I win one more time and

12:10

then I'll stop and then I'll win one

12:12

more game and then I'm like you know

12:14

what I need to win one more game and I

12:17

do it again it's like a game I play with

12:20

myself and so I end up staying up super

12:23

late and then I have to get up early in

12:25

the morning usually and then during the

12:28

day I'm dragging so what do I do I go

12:31

take a nap so all that does is keep me

12:35

exhausted pretty much all of the time

12:38

but then when it's time to lay down and

12:39

go to sleep I don't go to sleep I get up

12:43

play my game it's just a big pattern

12:46

right around and around the OCD Circle

12:49

it's just a

12:51

pattern number six hyperfocus on

12:54

symptoms in some cases individuals

12:57

experiencing anxiety May

13:00

hyperfocus on physical symptoms such as

13:02

sweating or body odor which can lead to

13:06

excessive grooming or conversely

13:09

avoidance of grooming due to fear of

13:12

judgment so this would apply to a person

13:16

who has contamination

13:18

OCD they bathe over and over again they

13:21

wash their hands over and over again um

13:24

they never feel

13:26

clean um they're just constantly doing

13:29

this or you know sometimes you have

13:31

someone who is performing these rituals

13:34

over and over again to keep themselves

13:36

safe or to keep someone else safe um

13:40

avoidance of grooming due to fear of

13:42

judgment I guess that means that um

13:46

maybe this person feels like they're not

13:49

doing it correctly so they just don't do

13:51

it at

13:52

all um number six hyperfocus on symptoms

13:57

I've never had that

14:00

um I've always been the

14:03

opposite never taking three or four

14:05

showers a day I've known people who do

14:08

though

14:10

and I think it's um I knew someone who

14:14

had children and from the very time they

14:18

were

14:19

born they had to take a bath in the

14:22

morning and they had to take a bath at

14:25

night and it was imperative it was the

14:28

rule in their house and I feel like that

14:30

was kind of setting these children up in

14:33

the

14:33

future to

14:36

hyperfocus on

14:39

hygiene I could be wrong but I just

14:41

remember thinking that wow you know

14:44

that's a lot to put on a

14:47

kid number seven is lack of

14:51

routine depression and anxiety can

14:53

disrupt daily routines including hygiene

14:56

routines without a structured daily

14:58

schedule schedule individuals may find

15:00

it challenging to consistently engage in

15:04

self-care

15:05

activities and and this is true I did

15:09

better at brushing my teeth when I

15:12

actually wrote them in my planner but I

15:15

haven't done that in a long time and I

15:17

would check it off twice a day morning

15:20

and evening brush my teeth this is

15:22

reminding me that maybe I need to do

15:24

that maybe I need to uh put showering in

15:28

my daily routine

15:29

but I think what's going to end up

15:31

happening is I'm going to get up one

15:33

morning and I'm going to see shower and

15:36

I'm going to go you know what I'm just

15:38

going to skip this today I think that's

15:41

probably what's going to up happening

15:43

maybe not so much with the tooth

15:45

brushing because it doesn't take as much

15:48

time but it takes a lot of time and

15:50

energy to to take a shower really does

15:54

when I get in the shower I don't take a

15:57

super short shower okay

15:59

and we have a swimming pool and one of

16:01

the reasons why I mean I love swimming

16:03

and everything but one reason I don't

16:06

swim every day is the showering issue

16:10

because if I want to swim for an hour

16:13

then it's going to take me at least 30

16:15

minutes to take a shower and then

16:19

somewhere in there my hair needs to

16:22

dry and it just becomes it just becomes

16:25

a pain so lack of

16:29

[Music]

16:30

I'm going to try to make myself

16:32

accountable this week and write

16:34

toothbrushing twice a day on my um

16:37

planner and see if that

16:41

works um the last one number eight is

16:43

social withdrawal depression and anxiety

16:46

can lead to social withdrawal or

16:49

isolation reducing the perceived need

16:51

for maintaining personal hygiene

16:54

especially if there are fewer social

16:56

interactions to motivate these behaviors

16:58

years you know that we just talked about

17:01

that a few minutes ago you know during

17:03

Co was really really rough because we

17:05

weren't leaving and so my hygiene

17:09

routines really went to pot at that time

17:11

because nobody was seeing me nobody was

17:13

around and you know I didn't care

17:18

um so maybe scheduling time into my week

17:23

where I am around other people maybe

17:27

that would make me care because I go to

17:29

work twice a week into the office and so

17:32

I always make sure I take a shower the

17:34

morning before I leave so those two days

17:37

are taken those two days are definitely

17:39

shower days whereas if I would go

17:42

somewhere every single day uh I'm not

17:45

talking about like going to the store

17:47

like I go to a store every Monday

17:49

morning and shop for my

17:51

business but I'm talking more about

17:54

meeting friends or going to church or

18:00

you know going to some kind of group and

18:03

I need social interaction anyway so I

18:06

need to start thinking about ways that I

18:08

can get out and meet other people and do

18:10

things and you know have lunch with

18:13

somebody I mean I should shower before I

18:16

do that

18:18

right it's important to note that the

18:20

severity of these effects can vary

18:23

greatly from person to person and depend

18:26

on various factors including the individ

18:28

ual specific symptoms the presence of

18:31

other mental health conditions and the

18:34

level of support available to them

18:37

professional support from therapists

18:39

counselors or mental health

18:40

professionals can be crucial in

18:42

addressing these challenges and

18:45

developing strategies to manage daily

18:47

hygiene despite the impact of depression

18:50

and

18:52

anxiety while I will say that this

18:54

episode has been very uncomfortable for

18:56

me I

19:00

um talked about some things that I

19:03

haven't talked about on this program

19:05

before and it's embarrassing to

19:09

me and I know there's people who I know

19:12

are going to listen to this episode

19:14

and but I'm glad that I did it I'm glad

19:17

that I talked about it I feel a little

19:19

bit better it's given me some things to

19:21

think about writing uh toothbrushing on

19:25

my planner for instance trying to get

19:27

out more social ially so that I have a

19:30

reason to be clean and just trying to

19:33

take note of how my hygiene affects

19:37

other people it's not only healthier for

19:40

me to be clean and groomed it's more

19:45

pleasant for other people around me but

19:48

if I don't have other people around me

19:51

then I tend to get stuck in that rut and

19:53

I want to get out of that rut and if

19:55

you're in that rut right now I hope that

19:57

you will do some things

19:59

this week and the next week and week

20:01

after that that will help you um pay

20:04

more attention to your hygiene and I

20:07

wish you all well I hope you have an

20:09

amazing week I'd really really like to

20:11

see you on our Facebook page the link is

20:14

below we'd love to have you we're a

20:16

small group but it's nice to talk with

20:19

people who have obsessive compulsive

20:21

disorder and kick some ideas around

20:25

and um I will be here bright and early

20:28

next Monday morning so stay tuned for

20:30

that and on Thursdays I have midweek

20:34

motivation I hope you'll tune in for

20:36

that and till next time remember that

20:39

OCD while it cannot be cured it can be

20:43

managed and I'm living proof of that

20:46

I'll talk to you soon

Mixed Emotions Today

Hi, everyone. It's been a looong time since I've written on this blog. I'm not even sure if anyone has been reading it. I have...
